Cereal of the Month!

Paddling Life has finally bestowed our much-awaited Cereal of the Month Award on a truly worthy candidate. No, it’s not Life cereal, as some might expect. Rather, it’s the darkhorse Kroger Frosted Wheat Puffs, complete with a bug-eyed frog on the box padding a whitewater ribbon of milk through a frosted wheat puff boulder garden. Who among us hasn’t been bug-eyed from whitewater—especially a run that says “Enlarged to Show Detail”? Though our Class V frog is paddling C-1 with a spoon rather than a double blade, and has a flag tag on his stern like a permit of the Middle Fork, he’s making all the right moves…and so should you with a bowl of Kroger’s Quality Guaranteed Frosted Wheat Puffs.

First, some vitals. Eating just one half-cup serving (serving suggestion) out of the 18-ounce box will more than ready you for the day’s paddle. You’ll get 11 essential vitamins and minerals, 110 calories, 3 % of your daily recommended allowance of sodium, 1% of your potassium and 8 % of your carbohydrates. And look no farther than the first five ingredients to rest at ease knowing you’ll have more than enough energy to power through whatever lurks downstream: Sugar, Wheat, Corn Syrup, Honey and Salt. The sixth ingredient? Caramel color, just like the Grand at flood.

But wait, there’s more. Pick up a box and you’ll also get a recipe for Apple Streusel Quick Bread you can make at camp, and a back-of-the-box American Heroes Word Search (featuring such hidden stalwarts as Daniel Boone, William Penn and Paul Revere), that you can play while waiting for shuttle. If the shuttle takes longer than expected, you can also try the Bonus game of figuring out the remaining letters’ famous John Paul Jones quote. (Hint: you can recite the mantra in the midst of a bad whitewater run as well…“I have not yet begun to fight.”)
