Gore Fest 2016
Where in the past Gore Fest only involved a marquee Class V downriver race, this year, thanks to sponsors Downriver Equipment and American Whitewater, Gore Fest went large Aug. 26-28 with its multi-category Class V downriver races as well as freestyle event, SUP races, an anything-that-floats contest, and a raging, to-beat-all river bash and film premiere at Rancho del Rio…Held August 26th-28th, with a raging bash at Rancho del Rio on the Colorado River near Bond, Colorado, American Whitewater and Downriver equipment pulled off a coup with the 2016 Gore Canyon Race and Festival August 26th-28th.
This was largely due to water levels of 1400 cfs, most coming from the Blue out of Green Mountain reservoir. And it made for a bouncy ride, with safety personnel plenty busy below such marquee rapids as Gore and Tunnel Falls.
In the end, it was Aspen’s Charlie MacArthur winning the longboat division with a time of 20:43, followed by Cody Beach just two seconds back at 20:45 and Matt Wilson at 20:48.
In the short boat class, Spencer Huff clocked the fastest time at 22:36, with Marshall McQuillen taking second at 22:02 and Matt Klema notching third at 2:14.
In the carnage-filled raft class, where swims below Tunnel Falls kept throw-baggers busy, Team Short Balls came in first at 22:36, followed by Team Sage at 23:18 and the not necessarily PC Team Mike Hunt at 25:15.
“It had an event for everyone this year,” said organizers. “In addition to the famous Class V downriver race through Gore Canyon, we had a family fun float through Little Gore Canyon (class II/III), and a freestyle rodeo at the Gore Canyon Whitewater Park.”
Participants were also able to battle it out in the SUP Cross, SUP sprint through little Gore Canyon, or go the extra mile in the Marathon downriver SUP from Pumphouse to Rancho del Rio. An Anything but…Boats race wrapped things up at Rancho Saturday after the Gore Race followed by great local live music, photo slideshows, beer, food, and more.
This year’s Festival was sponsored by Down River Equipment and American Whitewater.
